Pop-Up Exhibit!

SoNa Chicago Contemporary Art is pleased to host a special exhibit by artist Michael Miller in recognition of  Endangered Species Day 2024. The exhibit features a huge mural that fills the entire gallery.

The piece is titled Family Portrait. “The mural is a tribute to all living things and our relationship to them, and it is a call to action.” states the artist. “It is intended as a time capsule of the present, a statement about our connection to the natural world, and a wake-up call for all of us to become good shepherds of our planet and all species that inhabit it. For present and future generations, we need to instill a love for nature and one another. The mural is dedicated to the delicate balance between the impact of human existence and species extinction around the world.” The work was inspired by, and is comprised of, the entire 2018 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service endangered animal list. The names of all the animals are hand-painted on the mural  along with over 100 animal portraits. The mural extends across 65 feet of book cover cloth.

Michael Miller is a visual artist, designer, woodworker, and musician. He lives in Oak Park, Illinois.

The mural was made between 2018 – 2020 and is being shown publicly for the first time. It will be on view from Friday, May 17 – Sunday, May 26, 2024.
